If you have an older property, its likely you still have a traditional style fuse-box. After a certain amount of time your fuse-box becomes worn and outdated and can lead to an unsafe electrical system. To avoid any harm being caused it’s a good idea to upgrade your fuse-box to the modern, upgraded version, the consumer unit.
Fuse-box VS. Consumer unit
So, what’s the difference? Well, a fuse-box simply uses fuses which will melt when a fault occurs within a circuit. This then cuts the power supply until the fuse has been rewired. Electrical fires and shocks are more common with a fuse-box due to the time taken for the fuse to melt. The consumer unit is much safer as the fuse doesn’t melt; it just breaks the electrical circuit when a fault is detected. This makes it much easier to detect which circuit has the fault also making repair quicker. The consumer unit also decreases the risk of electrical shock and fires due to the instant shut off power.
Many properties across Sussex will have an older style fuse-box. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s dangerous right now but over time it will need replacing to ensure a continued safe electrical system. Remember to always choose a registered electrician to ensure any electrical installations are fitted to the highest possible standard. Koning Electrical are NICEIC approved domestic installers so your Sussex home will be in safe hands.
Surge protection
Surge protection is fitted to avoid power surges and overloads. If a power surge is imminent the surge protection device will absorb the extra current occurring and disperse accordingly. This prevents any chance of damage, fire, and electrical shocks. All modern consumer units should be fitted with surge protection for an added layer of protection. It also allows our electrical system to cope with the number of electrical devices that are being used every day in our homes.
Fuse-box replacement
If you’re thinking of renovating your home, adding solar panels or EV car chargers, this will likely require your fuse-box to be upgraded for a consumer unit to cope with the added pressure.
More reasons your fuse-box might need an upgrade:
- Flickering lights & dimmers
- Faulty sockets
- Tripping electrics
- A fuse-box older than 25 years
- If your fuse-box still has asbestos flash guards
If your fuse-box is showing any of these signs, we really recommend a qualified electrician carries out an inspection. Koning Electrical are on hand to ensure homes across Sussex have safe and working electrical systems. Contact your local electricians in Sussex for more information.
